During these first 12 months we tried to keep the construction going on, but because we’re not a professional yard, we had to interrupt it many times due to our production call. Coming from a pile of plates to an almost finished hull is not as fast as someone might expect, but I think we’re doing well and the planned conclusion in 5 years is still realistic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;1° Aniversário!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Há exatamente um ano nós montamos a primeira caverna com pontos de solda. Durante esses primeiros 12 meses nós tentamos manter a construção andando, mas como não somos um estaleiro profissional, nós tivemos que interrompê-la muitas vezes devido às necessidades da nossa produção. But today I realized my last post on the construction theme was 46 days ago!&lt;br /&gt;What happened in the meantime? Well, lots of things…&lt;br /&gt;First we worked on the deck, trying to form a curved plate in the transition between the cabin top and the windshield. What an awkward work! The plate was first curved transversally with a hydraulic press, but we didn’t manage to curve it longitudinally at the same time. Then we had it rolled, but the process flattened our first work. We did the same work several times, and we constructed several press tools, with different radius in both width and length directions. Until now we haven’t reached a fair solution. We are approaching to the final result, though.&lt;br /&gt;Another front was on the construction of the “T” bar supporting structure for the floor. Most of the bars were built in a way to be bolted after the installation of the tanks in the bilge.&lt;br /&gt;The past few days we’ve been working on the steel floor over the engine room, building beams, stringers, columns, inspection hatches and a small stair leading to the aft cabin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;O assoalho&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Eu andei bastante ocupado nas últimas semanas e preguiçoso também. Mas hoje eu percebi que minha última postagem sobre o tema construção foi há 46 dias!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;O que aconteceu desde então? Bem, muitas coisas...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Primeiro nós trabalhamos no convés, tentando conformar uma chapa curva na transição entre o teto da cabine e o para-brisa. Que trabalho desajeitado! Primeiro a chapa foi curvada transversalmente com uma prensa hidráulica, mas não conseguimos curvá-la no sentido longitudinal ao mesmo tempo. Então mandamos calandra-la, mas o processo acabou achatando nosso primeiro trabalho. Nós fizemos o mesmo trabalho várias vezes, e construímos várias ferramentas, com diferentes raios em ambas as direções, transversal e longitudinal. Até agora não conseguimos uma resultado satisfatório. Mas estamos chegando à uma solução final, no entanto.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Outra frente de trabalho foi a construção da estrutura de suporte do assoalho com barras “T”. A maior parte das barras foi construída de maneira a ser aparafusada após a instalação dos tanques no bojo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Nos últimos dias nós estamos trabalhando no assoalho de aço sobre a casa de máquinas, construindo vigas, nervuras, colunas, escotilhas de inspeção e uma pequena escada que dá acesso à cabine de boat construction is a new raised floor for the future workshop. Having a work platform at the deck level will facilitate all the necessary tasks for the completion of the joinery, as well as the electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.&lt;br /&gt;On the boat itself, we’ve been working on a temporary wooden floor and also drilling holes to the electrical cables passage through the frames.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Piso elevado&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;A mais recente benfeitoria na construção do barco é um novo piso elevado para a futura oficina de trabalho. We found some small alignment problems around the stern, but everything will be solved in a few days. From a total of 19 designed frames, we’ve had 14 of them hoisted, and most of the stringers too. Steel Lady is getting a graceful shape and now she is easily recognizable as a real boat, and not only a mere pile of steel plates.&lt;br /&gt;On the other hand we were unlucky with the weather this past week, and we weren’t able to gritblast and paint any of the hull plates that will be used on the next step. One way or another, we still have a lot of work on frames and stringers before moving to the shell.&lt;br /&gt;For those interested in the daily progress, I am trying to upload fresh pictures at least once a day. De um total de 19 cavernas projetadas, nós já temos 14 delas içadas, e uma boa parte das longarinas também. A dama de aço está adquirindo uma forma graciosa a agora ela já é reconhecida como um barco de verdade, não apenas um mera pilha de chapas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Em contrapartida não tivemos sorte com o clima essa semana, e não pudemos jatear e pintar nenhuma das chapas do casco que serão usadas na próxima etapa. First, we didn’t have available workers to do the job. Because we are a reliable steel construction business, clients have always preference over my boat.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Second, when we finally got available workers, the relative humidity was too high for gritblasting and shop priming the plates. Weather will be our Achilles’ heel from now on, since we’re entering the wettest season in Curitiba. To overcome this, we’ll try to find “dry windows” to keep the work going.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Hopefully, the next step will be the beginning of the keel and hull assembling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Terra do Nunca&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Após 34 dias na "Terra do Nunca", nós finalmente conseguimos retomar os trabalhos e hoje jateamos e pintamos a quilha e algumas chapas do fundo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Nos últimos meses nós nos deparamos com vários problemas e nenhum progresso visível. Em primeiro lugar não tínhamos funcionários disponíveis para fazer o trabalho. Como somos uma empresa de construções metálicas confiável, nossos clientes têm sempre preferência sobre o meu barco.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Segundo, quando finalmente conseguimos funcionários disponíveis, a umidade relativa do ar estava muito alta para o processo de jateamento e pintura das chapas. O clima será nosso calcanhar de Aquiles de agora em diante, já que estamos entrando na estação mais úmida de Curitiba. Now, this oil film has to be removed before the plates undergo the grit blasting and priming process. This is what we’re doing now, washing them out with hot pressurized water and industrial degreaser.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Lavando as chapas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3366ff;"&gt;Depois do processo de decapagem, que foi feito nas chapas antes do corte a laser, um fino filme de óleo foi aplicado para criar uma barreira contra a umidade do ar, e prevenir o aço de oxidação prematura. Agora, este óleo tem que ser removido antes que as chapas prossigam para os processos de jateamento com granalha e pintura com primer de montagem. We don’t have anything similar to that in Brazil. I made a lot of contacts and harvested much useful information for my boat. I visited many sailboats of respectable brands, but almost all of them conceived for the weekend sailor. Even though, I left the show with some good ideas for a true cruising sailboat.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Because of my absence and the lack of free time among our staff, the construction of the sailboat was interrupted since the end of January, but on March 10th, we resumed working on the keel. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Before the interruption we had casted many concrete blocks inside the steel box. They will be used as casting molds for the lead blocks, which will be used later, as the ballast of the boat.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We faced a great problem trying to pull out the concrete blocks. After many pulling trials from above, we gave up and removed one of the lateral keel plates. The keel fell over accidentally for two times, and this lead to a complete misalignment and partially work lost. Now it will be partially rebuild in its correct place, between the hull assembling jigs.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Interrupção&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Aproveitei minhas férias para visitar o Miami Boat Show, e fiquei muito realizado. Não temos nada parecido no Brasil. Fiz diversos contatos e colhi muitas informações úteis para o meu barco. Visitei vários veleiros de marcas respeitadas, mas quase todos voltados para o velejador de fim de semana. Mesmo assim saí de lá com algumas boas idéias para um verdadeiro veleiro de cruzeiro.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Por causa do meu afastamento e da falta de pessoal com tempo livre, a construção do veleiro foi interrompida desde o final de janeiro, mas no dia 10 de março recomeçamos a trabalhar na quilha.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Antes da interrupção tínhamos fundido blocos de concreto dentro da caixa de aço. Eles servirão para fazer os moldes de fundição dos blocos de chumbo, que serão usados depois, como lastro do barco.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Enfrentamos um grande problema para a retirada dos blocos de concreto. Depois de várias tentativas de arrancá-los por cima, acabamos desistindo e retiramos uma das chapas laterais da quilha. Por duas vezes ela tombou acidentalmente e acabamos perdendo todo o serviço de alinhamento. Yesterday we began gritblasting the hull plates.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;Jateamento&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Nas últimas duas semanas os trabalhos diminuíram o ritmo por causa das festas de fim de ano.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;De um total de 18 “frames” (cavernas), até o momento concluímos a montagem de 16. The most significant one had just happened: my second marriage.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Because Pamela couldn’t take a vacation in March, just after our wedding, we decided to delay our honeymoon trip to July, and our chosen destinations were Martinique and St. Lucia, in the Caribbean.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;When the entire trip was already planned, in May, I got a phone call from Pam in the middle of some afternoon, who said something like this:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; “Tom, I’m at my dentist’s office, reading a travel magazine… There’s an article about the Grenadines… What a wonderful place! And it’s near St. Lucia! I‘d like to go there!” &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;That evening she got home bringing the magazine. I read the article, which described the Grenadines as a true paradise. Because it consists of dozens of tiny islands spread between St. Vincent and Grenada, though, it’s very difficult to a conventional tourist. The magazine tip was “the best way to visit the Grenadines is aboard a sailboat”. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;OK, that  was my dream, but I had never sailed, and I don’t have a sailboat!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;To please my wife, and my curiosity about sailboats, I started to research on the matter. Not only I found out there are many charter companies spread around the world, but that is also possible for an inexperienced person in sailing to hire a skipper to sail the boat.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;That weekend I went to Arena to watch another match of my beloved soccer team, Atlético Paranaense, and before the beginning of that match I told the story about the Grenadines and the sailboat to my father and brother. I was in doubt because the charter was to expensive for me, but they both convinced me not to think only about the money. That was my dream, after all, and the trip would be unforgettable.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The plans were redone, and after a wonderful week in Martinique, we disembarked on St. Lucia and went directly to the Moorings base, the rental company. After the formalities and preparations we were introduced to our skipper, Lucas Alcee, and to our boat, Sarah Dipity, a 35-feet Beneteau.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We left Marigot’s dock by noon, and headed south. The short and calm sailing of that afternoon was magnificent. Since the west coast of the island is protected from the Atlantic Ocean swells, the sea was very calm and Lucas didn’t ask for help. We anchored on Jalousie Bay, near Soufrière and spent our first night enjoying the sea and the stars.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The next morning, we left the island of St. Lucia and headed to St. Vincent. On the crossing between both islands we got exposed to the wind and the waves from the Atlantic, and the tranquil trip of the day before was gone. Pam hadn’t even gotten up from the berth when we entered the roller-coaster. I was trying to prepare our breakfast, but I was forced to give up and keep up with Lucas, in the cockpit. The following hours were very uncomfortable, mostly to Pam who refused to left our cabin, and asked me frequently to change the bowl to which she kept glued to, slipping over the sheets from side to side of our berth. In one of my raids the help her I was also defeated by the seasickness and ran back to the cockpit. As a result I had to feed the fish with the fruits I had just managed to swallow. When we finally arrived to the shelter of the island of St. Vincent, Pam came out from the cabin and joined us, without saying a word. It is the end of my dream, I thought.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Late afternoon we anchored on the tiny Wallilabou Bay, where there was a nice and smooth swing. After a plunge and a shower, we had dinner and fall asleep.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The next morning I made breakfast and woke Pam up, anticipating some negative reaction on the account of the eve’s crossing. She opened her eyes, gave me a smile and asked me: “when are you planning to begin your boat construction? I’m loving the life on a boat!” After a great breakfast we hoisted the anchor and headed to Bequia. I took over the helm for the rest of the trip. Lucas began teaching me some sailing lessons and I began day-dreaming about own sailboat in the near future.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The dream was reborn from the ashes, like a Phoenix.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;A Fenix&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Os anos se passaram, e meu projeto de construção do veleiro tinha sido abandonado.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Já estávamos em 2008 e várias mudanças tinham acontecido na minha vida. A mais significativa delas tinha acabado de acontecer: meu segundo casamento.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Como a Pâmela não podia tirar férias em março, logo após o casamento, decidimos adiar nossa viagem de lua de mel para julho, e os destinos escolhidos foram a Martinica e St. Lucia, no Caribe.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Quando toda a viagem já estava planejada, em maio, recebi um telefonema da Pam no meio de uma tarde, que disse mais ou menos assim:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;“Tom, eu estou no consultório da dentista e estou lendo uma revista de viagens... Tem um artigo sobre as Grenadinas... Que lugar maravilhoso! E fica perto de St. Lucia! Eu quero ir pra lá!”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Naquela noite ela chegou em casa com a revista em baixo do braço. Eu li o artigo, que descrevia as Grenadinas como um verdadeiro paraíso, mas pelo fato de serem dezenas de ilhas e ilhotas espalhadas entre St.Vincent e Grenada, dificulta muito o turismo convencional. A dica da revista era “a melhor opção para conhecer as Grenadinas é a bordo de um veleiro”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;OK, aquele era meu sonho, mas nunca tinha velejado, e não tenho um veleiro!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Pra satisfazer a vontade da minha mulher, e a minha curiosidade a respeito de veleiros, comecei a pesquisar o assunto. Descobri que existem várias companhias de “charter” que alugam veleiros em vários pontos do planeta, e que é possível, pra quem não tem experiência em vela, contratar um skipper para comandar o barco.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Naquele fim de semana fui à Arena, assistir mais um jogo do meu time do coração, o Atlético Paranaense, e antes do início da partida comentei com meu pai e meu irmão sobre a história do veleiro e das Grenadinas. Eu estava em dúvida porque achei o charter muito caro, mas os dois foram convincentes e disseram para eu não pensar só no dinheiro, pois aquele era meu sonho, e a viagem seria inesquecível.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Refeitos os planos de viagem, e após uma semana maravilhosa na Martinica, desembarcamos em St.Lucia e fomos direto para a base da Moorings, a companhia que nos alugou o veleiro. Depois das formalidades e preparativos, fomos apresentados ao nosso skipper, Lucas Alcee, e ao nosso veleiro, Sarah Dipity, um Beneteau de 35 pés.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Deixamos a doca de Marigot em torno do meio dia, e rumamos pro sul. A velejada curta e muito tranqüila daquela tarde foi magnífica. Como a costa oeste da ilha é protegida das vagas do Oceano Atlântico, o mar é muito calmo e o Lucas nem precisou de ajuda. Ancoramos na baia Jalousie, perto de Soufrière e passamos nossa primeira noite curtindo o mar e as estrelas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;No dia seguinte deixamos a ilha de St. Lucia em direção a St Vincent. Na travessia entre as duas ilhas ficamos expostos ao vento e às vagas do Atlânitco e a viagem tranqüila da tarde anterior ficou para trás. A Pam nem tinha levantado do beliche ainda quando entramos na montanha russa. Eu tentava preparar o café da manhã, mas fui forçado a desistir e fazer companhia ao Lucas no cockpit. As horas que se seguiram foram muito desconfortáveis, principalmente para a Pam que se recusava a sair da cabine e me pedia freqüentemente que eu trocasse a bacia na qual ela ficava agarrada, deslizando sobre o lençol de um lado para o outro do beliche. Numa das minhas descidas para socorrê-la eu também fui derrotado pelo mal estar, e voltei correndo para o cockpit. Acabei alimentando os peixinhos com as frutas que tinha conseguido comer um pouco antes. Quando chegamos finalmente ao abrigo da ilha St.Vincent, a Pam saiu da cabine e juntou-se a nós, pálida, sem pronunciar uma só palavra. É o fim do meu sonho, eu pensei.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;No fim da tarde ancoramos na pequena baia Wallilabou, onde o veleiro voltou a ter um balanço gostoso e suave. Depois de um mergulho e uma ducha, jantamos e fomos dormir.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Na manhã seguinte preparei o café da manhã e fui acordar a Pam, antecipando alguma reação negativa sobre a travessia do dia anterior. Ela abriu os olhos, abriu um sorriso e perguntou: “quando você vai começar a construir o veleiro? Eu estou adorando a vida no barco!” Depois de um saboroso café da manhã nós levantamos a âncora e partimos em direção a Bequia. Eu assumi o leme pelo resto da viagem. We also started the final assembling of the jigs. Foi iniciada também a montagem dos cavaletes. I visited two boatyards, Metallic Boats, in Triunfo (RS, Brazil) and Elan, in Slovenia. I went to Rio de Janeiro to meet the legendary Roberto Barros “Cabinho”, one of the co-authors of Paratii’s design, the aluminum sailboat that Amyr Klink built for his wintering and later circumnavigation of Antarctica.&lt;br /&gt;I was choosing the ideal design, among many world known designers, but I didn’t have the courage to start such unknown path.&lt;br /&gt;Little by little I put the books aside and stopped looking for people who could help me. I decided to let the time go by, and wait.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3333ff;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"&gt;O sonho quase morreu&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3333ff;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Em 1999 me divorciei da minha primeira mulher, e como fui submetido àquela lavagem cerebral pelo Max alguns anos antes, resolvi que era a hora de começar a realizar meu sonho.&lt;br /&gt;Comecei a pesquisar a respeito de construção de veleiros. Comprei livros, pesquisei em todas as fontes possíveis, incomodei muita gente.&lt;br /&gt;Durante dois ou três anos me dediquei ao assunto com certa profundidade, fui visitar dois estaleiros, o Metallic Boats, em Triunfo (RS) e o Elan, na Eslovenia. Fui até o Rio de Janeiro conhecer o lendário Roberto Barros “Cabinho”, um dos co-autores do projeto do Paratii, o veleiro de alumínio que Amyr Klynk construiu para sua invernagem e posterior circumnavegação da Antártica.&lt;br /&gt;Estava escolhendo o projeto ideal, entre vários projetistas reconhecidos mundialmente, mas não tive a coragem de iniciar uma caminhada tão desconhecida pra mim.&lt;br /&gt;Aos poucos fui deixando os livros de lado e parei de procurar pessoas que pudessem me ajudar. Some of the stories we shared were hilarious, almost tragicomic, and his essays full of humor, telling those stories, circulated at Amaral* making other swimmers laugh their hearts out. Good old times!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;That day I told Max about a dream: a trip around the world, without any pre-defined path to follow. Just do it. I dreamed about doing it by land, but he interrupted me and said: “&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; "&gt;why don’t you take this trip on a sailboat? You’re an engineer and you work with steel constructions, so you could build your own sailboat, a steel sailboat&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;His statement sounded like a Dali’s idea: surreal. Just like his author.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;“Sailboats cannot be made of steel, they’re made of wood or fiberglass. Steel is just for big ships”, I thought. And immediately after that I pictured myself sailing. Me… Whose biggest naval experience was restricted to some passages aboard a ferry in Guaratuba (10 minutes between docks, sitting inside a car).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;In the following classes, if we could call them classes, we kept talking about traveling (more frequently sailboats) instead of learning. In English, at least.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;But Max didn’t give up of his crazy idea and I finally found myself researching about the subject. I realized that steel sailboats aren’t just viable, but also sturdy and safe. And there is nothing more useful for someone who wants to reach unconventional places.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;From then on I alternated periods of dedicated studies and total discouragement. I had almost given up when, in 2008, a new fact brought a new energy to my dream. This is for an upcoming post, though.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;*”Amaral” is the way we call “Amaral Swimming School”, in Curitiba. It’s the place where I made great friends and where I lived great moments. It was the place where I devoted myself to serious swimming for many years, but I hope I’ll never have to use it in a Cape Horn rounding.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;O princípio de tudo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Curitiba, anos 90. Numa das aulas particulares de inglês com o Max, que também era meu colega de masoquismo nos treinos alucinantes de natação daquela época, estávamos conversando sobre viagens, nosso tema predileto.&lt;br /&gt;Não me considero um cara convencional, mas o Max é o tipo de cara menos convencional ainda. Algumas das histórias que vivi com ele foram hilárias, quase sempre tragicômicas, e seus textos recheados de muito humor circulavam na Amaral* fazendo a alegria dos nadadores da nossa equipe daquela época. Bons tempos!&lt;br /&gt;Naquele dia eu contei pro Max que tinha um sonho: fazer uma volta ao mundo, mas sem rumo ou roteiro definido. Apenas partir. Sonhava em fazer isso por terra. Foi então que ele me interrompeu: "&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; "&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;porque você não faz essa viagem num veleiro? Como você é engenheiro e trabalha com construções metálicas, poderia fazer o teu próprio veleiro, e de aço&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;!".&lt;br /&gt;A frase eccoou como uma obra de Dalí: surreal. Assim como seu autor.&lt;br /&gt;"Veleiros não podem ser de aço, eles são feitos de madeira ou fibra de vidro. Aço é só pra navios e grandes embarcações", eu pensei. E no instante seguinte me imaginei velejando, logo eu, cuja experiência naval se restringia a algumas travessias no ferry-boat de Guaratuba.&lt;br /&gt;A conversa continuou nas aulas seguintes, que de aulas não tinham nada, pois ficávamos apenas conversando sobre viagens (e agora também sobre veleiros). Em inglês, pelo menos.&lt;br /&gt;Mas o Max não desistiu da idéia maluca e acabou me convencendo a pesquisar o assunto. Descobri que veleiros de aço não são apenas viáveis, mas são também robustos e seguros. E pra me meter em lugares pouco convencionais, seria imprescindível ter essas qualidades.&lt;br /&gt;Nos anos seguintes alternei pesquisas dedicadas com fases de desestímulo total, um quase abandono da idéia, até que em 2008 o um fato novo fez o sonho voltar com força total.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*"Amaral" é o nome carinhoso da Escola de Natação Amaral, de Curitiba. Local onde fiz grandes amigos, e vivi grandes momentos. Cutting of plates will be carried out on a CNC (computerizing numeric control) driven laser cutting machine.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;The shipbuilding quality plates are produced by a siderurgical plant, coiled and delivered to the distribution centers. There, they are uncoiled, plannified, unwarped and cut on desired length. At the end of the process they are delivered on a flat pack.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;A construção&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;Após anos de sonhos, pesquisas e conversas, a construção do veleiro finalmente começou.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Por enquanto são apenas chapas de aço empilhadas em algum barracão de São Paulo, aguardando o embarque para o processo de corte. O corte das chapas será feito por uma mesa de corte a laser CNC (controle numérico computadorizado).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As chapas de qualidade naval são produzidas pela usina siderúrgica, enroladas em bobina e transportadas para os centros de distribuição. Lá elas são desbobinadas, planificadas, desempenadas e cortadas no comprimento desejado.
